Zion National Park Nature Center

Geology of Zion National Park Drawing

At Zion National Park in Southwest Utah, one of the most visited of our national parks, the Nature Center is a quiet oasis of hands-on learning and informal interactions. Studio Tectonic, the project design lead, worked with NPS staff to bring the existing exhibits up to a professional level, enhancing impact while working within a narrow budget and in the constraints of an historically designated building. Full-wall interpretive murals were developed—saving considerable expense and facilitating an easy breakdown of exhibits when the center closes for the season. Careful attention was given to NPS design standards while reinterpreting content for this exhibit’s target audience: families and children.

NPS team members were integral partners in co-developing tactile and photographic exhibit assets. Durable, inexpensive materials invite visitors to touch and engage with nature-related content. The project is an excellent example of designing within tight budget constraints, while implementing creative and highly effective interpretive approaches.
