Antique Boat Museum Site Assessment

The Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, NY is home to over 320 boats, thousands of artifacts, and archives. Studio Tectonic provided a site assessment of the overall museum, wayfinding systems, and exhibitions. Informal discussions with staff helped identify areas of greatest needs and helped focus the assessment effort.

Recommendations include:
• Improved wayfinding signage introductory/organizing systems to help visitors with more ease and independence/confidence
• Additional seating to enhance visitor comfort
• The creation of an interpretive master plan to help steer individual exhibit efforts with an institutional-wide perspective on how/what ABM wants to communicate with the public

The Site Assessment and Recommendations document that Studio Tectonic created outlines the effort and visitor impact of each recommendation, allowing the ABM to begin to prioritize and commit staff and budget resources. Though the scope of the document does not provide detailed implementation plans, it helps identify areas of improvement that are easy to implement and high impact, facilitating the use of the assessment in developing a phasing strategy.
